Therapeutic Yoga

Yoga Therapy is a personalized approach to health, healing and freedom from pain. Many times pain in the body is a signal that there is dysfunction and compensation that we don’t even know we have. Or we have been pushing through pain for so long it is the only way we know how to carry on.

Therapeutic Yoga can help you find function again, and in profoundly simple ways.

Through a system of ease and relaxation, then building stability and strength, your body will rediscover what moving through a pain-free range means again. Learning how to move the major joints in their optimal range of movement (specifically for you), leads to dissolving pain or tension and ultimately results in better functional movement overall.

Who can Benefit from Yoga Therapy?

Whether you are in chronic pain from an injury or illness, pre- or post- surgery, or wanting to have a more optimum yoga practice, yoga therapy can help you. Therapeutic yoga is a gentle and effective system of movement and breath that is safe for all ages and levels of mobility.

Geared for the lay person with back pain, this class guides the participants through a self assessment to identify their specific pain triggers. This knowledge is then used to guide how to avoid the pain triggers (remove the cause) followed by an exercise progression matched to the individual’s needs (through the class and specifically through the private session). The guidance is evidence based and follows the teachings of Stuart McGill, PhD, author of “Back Mechanic”.

This series is meant for those who have some mobility and is not meant to take the place of a physician or physical therapist. This material has been proven to effectively help individuals with practical steps toward recovery from back pain.

To be the best prepared, I suggest ordering the book in advance to familiarize yourself with the step by step McGill Method that we’ll be using in class: “Back Mechanic”.

Pain Free at Work and Home

This 75 minute class guides you through a series of gentle, safe Somatic exercises, which, when practiced daily (or hourly) at your desk, will teach you to release tight, painful back, neck and shoulder muscles that have simple "forgotten" how to relax.

These muscles learn to stay tight due to long hours seated at a desk and they contribute to back, jaw, neck, shoulder, arm, and wrist pain. A few minutes each hour is all you need to remind these muscles to relax, release and "refresh," which will reduce or eliminate typical office pain and contribute to more energy during and after work.

No scheduled classes at this time.

Saturdays, 1-2:15pm

•    $25 class

•    4th Avenue Yoga, 1815 S. 4th Avenue Yoga

Pre-registration is required. Please click on the 'register' button below or call Jill at 605-413-8852 to save your spot. No yoga mat required, wear comfortable clothes. Space is limited.
